I have been working with vessels that carry images of birds and animals to talk about essential life stories since 2007. I was able to teach in Italy for 3 months in 2011 and was fascinated by how the body was fragmented for ritual, superstition and to call on the religious supernatural. Of particular interest were the talisman, amulets, milagros and reliquaries that I saw each in a different context. I have started with hands because they are irresistibly beautiful, expressive and represent a real challenge to my thinking and making skills. These hands are both classical and contemporary that makes them timeless. The position of these hands is interesting to me because at the same time they are offering something and asking for something and hopefully carry some of the mysterious expressive power that the human mind perceives in the human body.
